Do I need orthognathic surgery for my under bite?

I’ve never had braces before but am getting them this summer. I have a class 3 jaw, meaning my lower jaw is too forward. The orthodontist said the braces will not change my skeletal jaw structure, but surgery will. Now, whenever I look at myself all I see is how my lower jaw is way too forward… is it in my head or do you guys see it too? Do you think I should get the surgery after I take my braces off (its pretty expensive, 20,000+)?

Sorry about the bad pictures….

Thank you.

I honestly don’t see it. It doesn’t look that bad at all. My orthodontist told me last year that I may need surgery because I had a developing underbite and they weren’t sure how much more my jaw was going to grow. I freaked out for the longest time and thought that my lower jaw looked horrible. It was a pretty crummy month or two until the feeling passed and I got over it. I notice now that my jaw doesn’t look like I have an underbite at all and it was all in my head. Trust me, you’re making yourself see it all, your jaw doesn’t look too far forward. I understand 100% what you feel and you really don’t need to be down about it at all :)
I personally don’t think that the surgery is worth it, but that’s something you really need to discuss with your orthodontist and parents and weigh the pros and cons. At the end though, it’s your decision so do what will make you feel best. Good luck with everything! :)
