Anyone have back surgery? What to expect?

I go in tomorrow for back surgery. They are removing my damaged disk and fusing my L5 and S1 vertebrae. I’ve tried everythng else first and nothing else has been able to take the pressure off the nerves to my left leg and I’ve been in horrible pain for the last 6 months. I’m ready to do this and not really nervous. More relieved than anything. My doctor has gone over everything from the procedure to what to expect afterward. However, I would like to hear from people who have had it done. How long was recovery? How long until you felt human again? How do you feel now? Worst part? And most important….how did you sleep? Did you have to wear your back brace at night, too? Any details you can provide me with, I’ll appreciate.

Sorry I don’t know much but I knew a friend who underwent back surgery. He recovered after a few months. And since he’s middle aged he has back pains every now and then, he uses pain killers for the worst of his problem.
My opion for the worst part would be the aftermath, where you lay on your back for sleep, or bend it over to pick something up, And I guess posture has some effect on back pain. Oh and my friend isn’t human so yeah. (Humour =D)
